On this last day of March, it’s a good time to pause and reflect on the incredible energy and connection we saw throughout International Women’s Day and the many events that followed. Across Australia, women and their allies showed up – celebrating achievements, sharing stories, and continuing important conversations about equality and inclusion.
One of the most powerful highlights this year happened on the global stage. And it's worth restating here, in case you missed it.
For the first time ever, the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women recognised older women as a priority group. This is a significant and long-overdue step forward – and a reminder that gender equality must include women at every age and stage of life.
Because the truth is, older women are too often overlooked. Many face challenges like financial insecurity, age discrimination, and limited access to opportunities – despite the enormous contributions they’ve made throughout their lives.
Older women are at the heart of our communities. They’re carers, leaders, mentors, volunteers and changemakers. They’ve opened doors, challenged norms and created pathways for the generations that follow. There is so much we can learn from their experiences, resilience and wisdom – no matter how old (or young) we are.
This moment is also a chance to take action. If you’re in New South Wales (or just interested), you can have your say on the NSW Seniors Strategy – helping shape the policies that affect older Australians. It’s a valuable opportunity to ensure that women’s voices of every age are heard and reflected in decisions that matter.
Progress is strongest when it’s shared across generations. When we listen to each other, support each other, and learn from one another, we all move forward together.
So as March comes to a close, let’s carry that International Women’s Day momentum with us. Keep celebrating, advocating and making space for every woman’s voice – especially those who have paved the way. Because equality doesn’t have an age limit – and neither does impact.
