It's time to harness the simple power of saying something nice.
A few days ago, someone said something unexpectedly kind about me in a social media post. It landed deeply. It made me feel seen, acknowledged and worthy.
And it reminded me how powerful a few generous words can be.
In business, we often focus on what needs fixing, what needs doing, what still has to be achieved and where the next opportunity might come from. Sometimes the most meaningful gift we can give someone in our network is to pause long enough to tell them what we genuinely notice and appreciate.
A thoughtful compliment can do more than brighten someone’s day. Science tells us there is a reason those words feel so good. Researchers studying the neuroscience of praise have found that receiving sincere positive feedback activates areas of the brain associated with reward and positive emotion. In other words, being recognised and valued creates a very real response in how we think and feel. Workplace research by Gallup has also shown that meaningful recognition helps build engagement, connection and a greater sense of belonging.
That makes sense. When someone notices our effort, courage, consistency or generosity, it reminds us that our contribution matters. It can be especially powerful in business, where so many people are carrying quiet doubts, heavy responsibilities or the fatigue of constantly pushing forward.
The lovely thing is that this does not require a grand gesture. A simple comment can be enough.
“You handled that beautifully.”
“I really admire the way you support others.”
“Your post gave me something useful to think about.”
“I can see how much care you put into your work.”
These words cost nothing, but they can stay with someone for a very long time.
How can we make saying something nice part of our everyday routine?
Start by noticing effort, not only outcomes. Compliment the preparation, kindness, persistence or thought behind someone’s work.
Be specific. “Great job” is lovely, but “The way you explained that made a complex issue feel simple” is far more memorable.
Say it when you think it. Too often, we admire someone silently. Next time, send the message, leave the comment, write the review or make the phone call.
Make it part of your networking habit. After an event, reach out to one person and tell them what you appreciated about the conversation.
And finally, receive compliments graciously. A simple “thank you, that means a lot” allows the kindness to land.
This week, I encourage you to give that gift to someone in your network.
Tell them what you value. Tell them what you see. Tell them why they matter.
You may never know how much they needed to hear it.
